Walk-in freezers

Freezers fail differently than coolers

A walk-in freezer has to hold around 0°F while Florida air pushes 90°F and full humidity through the door. Every opening brings in moisture that turns to ice, so a freezer depends on its defrost system, its door heaters and its drain heater in ways a cooler never does.

When one of those pieces fails, the symptoms build slowly: a little ice on the coil, a door that sticks, a box that drifts from 0°F to 10°F to 20°F. We find the failed part, clear the ice the right way, and get the box back down before your product starts to soften.

Call us if your walk-in freezer is…

  • Reading above 0°F, or climbing toward 10°F
  • Covered in ice on the coil, fan guard or ceiling
  • Frozen shut, or the door won’t seal
  • Leaking water, or growing an ice block on the floor
  • Running all the time without getting colder
  • Soft ice cream or thawing product on the top shelves
What we work on

What we fix on walk-in freezers

The freezer-specific parts first, then everything a cooler has too.

  • Defrost heaters, timers and termination switches
  • Iced evaporator coils and fan blades
  • Door frame heaters and frozen doors
  • Drain lines and drain line heaters
  • Door gaskets, closers and pressure relief vents
  • Evaporator and condenser fan motors
  • Compressors and condensing units
  • Expansion valves and solenoids
  • Refrigerant leaks, repair and recharge
  • Thermostats, controls and temperature alarms
Why freezers ice up

Most freezer calls are really defrost calls

Ice is the symptom. The cause is almost always one of these.

Defrost that never finishes

A failed heater, timer or termination switch lets ice build on the coil a little more each cycle until no air gets through and the box warms up.

Wet air at the door

A torn gasket, a dead door heater or a door that doesn’t close on its own pulls humid Florida air into the box, and it all turns to frost.

A frozen drain

If the drain line heater fails, defrost water refreezes in the line, backs up into the pan and becomes an ice block on the floor or the coil.

FAQ

Walk-in freezer questions

Anything else? Call us at (863) 661-0830.

What temperature should a walk-in freezer be?

Most walk-in freezers are set between -10°F and 0°F. Food stays frozen and safe at 0°F or below, but a box that keeps drifting above 0°F is telling you something is wrong, usually with defrost, the door or airflow.

Why is there ice on my freezer coil?

Usually a defrost problem: a burned-out heater, a bad timer or termination switch, or a frozen drain line. Door gaskets and door heaters that let humid air in make it worse. Don’t chip ice off the coil, you can puncture it. Call us and we’ll defrost it and fix the cause.

My freezer door is frozen shut. What happened?

The door frame heater keeps the gasket from freezing to the frame. When it fails, or the gasket is torn, ice forms around the opening. Don’t force the door. We replace the heater or gasket and check the pressure relief vent too.

How fast can you get here?

Emergency service is available. Call, tell us the temperature and what you’re seeing, and we’ll give you an honest arrival time. In the meantime keep the door shut. A full freezer holds its temperature for hours if nobody opens it.
